The MG4 EV and MG ZS EV are two of the most impressive electric cars you can buy. Both offer a realistic electric range, a generous level of equipment and affordable prices.

This is a broad overview of what you need to know about buying an MG electric car in 2024. The information contained here will change over time, so this page will be updated regularly.

Buying an electric MG

What fully electric cars does MG sell?

Right now, MG sells three fully electric cars: the MG4 EV and ZS EV SUVs, plus the MG5 EV Long Range estate car.

Which MG electric cars are coming soon?

The MG Cyberster electric sports car will arrive towards the end of 2024. It promises to be one of the most exciting new electric cars of the year, boasting 496hp and a 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds. MG is quoting an officially tested range of 316 miles.

What is the MG electric car brand called?

There isn’t a brand name as such. MG’s electric cars are simply labelled ‘EV’.

What is the warranty on a MG electric car battery?

Although the EVs are covered by MG’s seven-year, 80,000-mile warranty, the electric drive battery is covered by an eight-year warranty.

Where can you buy an MG electric car?

You can buy a new MG electric car from your nearest MG dealer. 

How much do MG electric cars cost?

The MG4 EV is the most affordable MG electric car, with a starting price of around £27,000. The high-performance MG4 EV XPower costs £36,500.

The MG ZS EV costs £30,500, while the MG5 EV Long Range will set you back £31,000. MG says the new Cyberster will cost £55,000 before options.

What type of plug do MG EVs use?

All MG EVs have a Type 2 connector for slow and fast charging, plus a CCS connector for rapid charging.

What charging equipment comes as standard with a MG electric car?

All MG electric cars come as standard with a 13A home charger that uses a domestic plug.

Can MG electric cars use rapid chargers?

Yes, all MG electric cars can use rapid chargers.

Can MG electric cars use Ionity chargers?

Yes, MG electric cars can also use the Ionity ultra-rapid charging network.

Where is the charging point located on a MG electric car?

On the MG4 EV, the charging point can be found on the passenger side rear wing, above the rear wheel.

On the MG ZS EV and MG5 Long Range, it’s located behind the badge on the front grille, which provides easy access from either side of the car. Just remember to drive forwards into charging bays.

Which charge partner does MG work with?

In 2022, MG announced an agreement with BP Pulse that gives new customers a discount when they buy a home charger and discounted membership of the company’s public charging network.

What is the MG wallbox called?

MG doesn’t offer a wallbox charger.

What wallbox options does MG offer?

MG advises its customers to take advantage of the BP Pulse discount when searching for a home wallbox.

Do you get a free wallbox when you buy a new MG electric car?

No, the wallbox costs extra, on top of the purchase price of the car.

What is the MG Charging Service?

MG doesn’t operate a proprietary charging service.

Do MG electric cars have an on-board DC charger?

MG electric cars come with a 7kW on-board charger.

What is the maximum charging speed of a MG electric car?

The maximum charging speed of the MG4 EV varies according to the model chosen. For example, the Standard Range has a charging speed of 117kW, while the Long Range models max out at 135kW.

The figures for the Trophy Extended Range and XPower models are 144kW and 140kW, respectively.

The MG ZS EV has a maximum charging speed of 76kW, while the MG5 Long Range can ‘refuel’ at 87kW.

Driving an electric MG

What is the range of an MG electric car?

The range of an MG electric car varies according to the model. For the longest range, choose the aptly named MG4 Trophy Extended Range, which can travel 323 miles between charges, according to the official figures. Other MG4 models range from 218 to 281 miles.

The MG ZS EV can travel 198 miles on a single charge in SE and Trophy guises, or 273 miles in SE Long Range or Trophy Long Range spec. Finally, the MG5 Long Range offers 250 or 235 miles in SE or Trophy spec, respectively.

What is the MG electric car smartphone app called?

The MG smartphone app is called MG iSMART. Along with helping you to find your parked car or locate charging points on your journey, the app means you can open the car remotely or pre-start the climate control to heat or cool the cabin in advance.

How many MG dealers are there and do they offer free charging for owners?

There are around 150 MG dealers in the UK. Some dealers may offer free electricity via partnerships with charging networks.

Does MG sat nav show charging point locations and availability?

For the latest information, download the MG iSMART app to your smartphone. It would also be worth downloading the excellent ZapMap app, along with the app for relevant charging network operators.
