© AudiThanks to advances in EV battery tech and improved charging infrastructure, ‘range anxiety’ (the fear of running out of juice) is becoming a thing of the past. Indeed, all but one of our top 20 long-range EVs can travel more than 300 miles between charges. Read on for the full rundown.

20. Audi E-tron GT – 298 miles
© AudiThe E-tron GT shares a lot in common with the Porsche Taycan. It offers 298 miles of electric range as standard, or 283 miles in the more powerful RS E-tron GT. The Audi isn’t as engaging to drive as the Porsche (no electric car is, frankly), but we reckon it’s better looking.

19. Hyundai Ioniq 5 – 315 miles
© HyundaiSpeaking of style, Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 – the reigning World Car of the Year – channels the spirit of a 1980s hot hatch into a radical, SUV-sized template. Its minimalist interior is equally innovative; the Ultimate version’s front seats fold flat, so you can enjoy a power-nap while you charge. In 77kWh RWD guise, the Ioniq 5 has a range of 315 miles.

18. Volkswagen ID. 4 – 317 miles
© VWThe Volkswagen ID. 4 is another World Car of the Year winner, taking the overall title in 2021. It’s a practical mid-size SUV – the electric equivalent of a Tiguan, if you will. Two battery sizes are available: 52kWh and 77kWh, with the latter offering up to 317 miles of range.

17. Porsche Taycan – 318 miles
© PorschePorsche’s first EV had a lot to prove, but it has silenced its critics. Whether you opt for the saloon, Sport Turismo estate or rugged-looking Cross Turismo, the Taycan is fast and fun to drive. To achieve 318 miles, you’ll need the 4S version with the larger 93kWh battery. Electric versions of the Macan and Boxster/Cayman are now on the horizon.

16. Kia EV6 – 328 miles
© KiaKia has been at the forefront of EV development for many years. This is its electric flagship: a sleek, coupe-style SUV with a spacious interior and sporty road manners. The base rear-wheel-drive EV6 has the longest range, managing an impressive 328 miles between fill-ups.

15. Volkswagen ID.3 – 336 miles
© VWThere’s a bewildering array of Volkswagen ID. 3 models, but you’ll need the range-topping Tour with the largest 77kWh battery to achieve 336 miles on a full charge. By contrast, the entry-level 58kWh version only manages around 260 miles. An updated ID. 3 with improved infotainment is due soon.

14. Hyundai Ioniq 6 – 338 miles
© HyundaiA futuristic fastback shape helps the new Ioniq 6 achieve 338 miles on a full charge. This drops to 322 miles for the four-wheel-drive version. Underneath the svelte bodywork, the Hyundai shares much with its Ioniq 5 sibling, including an 800-volt architecture that allows charging speeds of 233kW.

13. Skoda Enyaq iV – 339 miles
© SkodaMuscling on the premium market, the Skoda Enyaq iV offers the range, quality and value for money to steal sales from some of the more illustrious EVs. The mid-range Enyaq iV 80 has the larger 77kWh battery and covers up to 339 miles in the official tests. One of our favourite electric cars.

12. Tesla Model X – 348 miles
© TeslaThe Tesla Model X offers seating for you and six passengers, plus the theatre of ‘Falcon Wing’ rear doors. The standard Model X offers 348 miles of electric range and a 0-60mph time of 3.8 seconds. Opt for the supercar-slaying Plaid version and the figures are 333 miles and 2.5 seconds respectively.

11. BMW i4 – 365 miles
© BMWThe i4 has the least offensive version of BMW’s new supersized kidney grille so far. That’s not the only reason to buy one, however. This premium coupe offers agile handling, plus genuine M-car performance in 544hp M50 guise. Alternatively, you could drive 365 miles between charges in the more sensible i4 eDrive 40.

10. Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV – 366 miles
© Mercedes-BenzConfusingly, Mercedes-Benz now has two luxury cars called EQS. This is the SUV and, as you’d expect, it isn’t quite as long-legged as the saloon. Still, a maximum range of 366 miles for the EQS 450 4Matic isn’t to be sniffed at, particularly when combined with superb comfort and refinement. There is seating inside for seven people, too.

9. Ford Mustang Mach-E – 372 miles
© FordThe Mustang going electric certainly raised a few eyebrows, but the use of the pony badge makes sense. As does the Mach-E being an electric SUV, because that’s what the world wants. Available with a choice of two batteries and three power outputs, the Mach-E offers up to 372 miles of electric range. It’s packed with the latest tech, while practicality is guaranteed thanks to a roomy 402-litre boot and 100-litre ‘frunk’.

8. Lotus Eletre – 373 miles
© LotusWe’re cheating slightly here, because the Eletre doesn’t reach showrooms for another few months. Described as the ‘world’s first electric hyper-SUV’, this radically new Lotus will offer upwards of 600hp, advanced self-driving tech and a maximum range of 373 miles. Still want that Lamborghini Urus?

7. Tesla Model 3 – 374 miles
© TeslaTesla’s answer to the BMW 3 Series has become a regular fixture near the top of the UK sales chart. Whatever you think of Elon Musk, its popularity and all-round appeal are hard to ignore. Long Range versions can manage 374 miles on the WLTP test-cycle. Model 3 prices have recently been reduced, too.

6. BMW iX – 380 miles
© BMWNow the dust has settled, people can stop talking about the styling and concentrate on the gorgeous interior and clever tech. In entry-level xDrive 40 guise, the iX offers a respectable 264 miles of range, but this increases to 373 miles for the xDrive 50 with its 105kWh battery.

5. BMW i7 – 388 miles
© BMWBMW’s luxurious electric saloon is best experienced from the back seat, where you can enjoy the enormous 31-inch Theatre Screen that folds down from the roof. The driver isn’t short-changed, though, with plenty of power, whisper-quiet refinement and up to 388 miles from a single charge of the 101.7kWh battery.

4. Mercedes-Benz EQE – 394 miles
© Mercedes-BenzOne rung down from the flagship EQS, the EQE is effectively an electric E-Class. The EQE 350+ musters a 394-mile range from its 90kWh battery. Be warned, though: this decreases to just 356 miles if you opt for the largest alloy wheels. Inside, the EQE is crammed with cutting-edge tech, including the optional full-width dashboard Hyperscreen.

3. Polestar 2 – 395 miles
© PolestarVolvo’s electric offshoot wasted no time producing cars to take on Tesla. The Polestar 2 is a small executive car with the ride height and stance of an SUV. The 82kWh battery pack delivers up to 395 miles of range, with a rapid charge time of 10-80 percent in 28 minutes. Inside, you get understated Swedish design and Google-based infotainment.

2. Tesla Model S – 405 miles
© TeslaThe world is catching up with Tesla, and the Model S is no longer top dog when it comes to electric range. In Long Range form, it offers 405 miles on a fill-up, a top speed of 155mph and 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds. Having access to Tesla’s Supercharger network is a real advantage when driving long distances.

© Mercedes-Benz EQSFirst place in the range rankings goes to the Mercedes-Benz EQS – specifically the 450+ version, which manages 453 miles on a full charge. Our review said: ‘Just as the S-Class has often been cited as The Best Car in the World, so the EQS lays a decent claim to being the best EV’.
